DEVON CHOW, Ealing Young People's Voice in Youth Parliament
I believe with your vote I can rewrite the story for youths' future, better and fairer

Done for you:

Autumn
: 6 months in post, I am now more focussed on college/uni fees and gym vouchers to students. Arranging a petition accordingly, e.g. discussing with Ealing MPs (got a disappointing reply from David Willetts, the Minister of State for Universities and Science) and students. Meeting with Boris Johnson, Mayor of London in mid-Nov. You like the new "Your interests harmed" section?

Ongoing: I gave a presentation to a Chinese community (CIAC) in August, interviews to Ealing Gazette in March 2010, and to BBC London and BBC Chinese in April 2010 to spread our messages of youth priorities.  I attended regional MYP meetings to lobby for support for delivering my manifesto.

Let us youths determine our future now, fight together for

School curriculum (gym subsidy)
Student debt (tuition fees/tax holiday)
Based on my belief, I would like to contribute to the following areas with new ideas.

Issues

Objectives

How to achieve

Some youths just "switch off" because part of the school curriculum is boring (eg maths) and not relevant

Revise school curriculum to suit modern world

Make learning fun

Ensure right life attitude

  • Consider courses like life and survival skills (eg managing money - savings and credit cards), language skills (eg Chinese), health (obesity and boozing), climate change
  • Consider more action to complement classroom teaching, eg
    • subsidised international student exchange programmes for learning right attitudes such as about poverty, climate change and diversity
    • scout and girl guide activities
  • Consider giving schools more discretion in using different teaching methods to suit different students’ learning styles
  • As part of health education:
    • Build attractive sports facilities and/or subsidise gym membership during term breaks
    • Prevent access to junk food (eg restrictions on selling junk food near schools)
    • Provide guidance to parents

Young people (16-25) hurt by the recession with a fifth out of work today

Create better & more job opportunities

Ensure right skills and life attitude

  • Ensure effective government’s initiative Aim Higher (student placement, apprenticeship)
  • Promote youth participation in charity work

General consensus that university tuition fees are not affordable (This has been a priority of the Youth Parliament in recent years)

Create opportunities for university education / apprenticeships, a good career

  • Ensure affordable university fees
  • Tax holidays or concessions for fresh graduates; and/or
  • Government student loans

Internet is essential but far from safe and secure, eg threats from paedophiles, ID thefts and viruses

Proportionate government policy to ensure internet safety and security

  • Improve international cooperation on strengthening  internet safety and security
  • Provide guidance for service providers and users/parents

The above proposals also help to cut youth crimes, bullying and other anti-social behaviour.
